Staff Structure

This is a very unique Hillel staff structure because the three Hillels in the state of Colorado are comprised technically of one staff.  The Structure is hierarchical with the Executive Director is at the top.  Pat works out of the DU Hillel house the majority of the time.  The three campus directors, development director, and the administrative assistant are all directly below the executive director.  The JCSC Fellows are under their respective camps directors.  All staff members communicate with each other as needed, but the Fellows report to and coordinate with their campus director and the campus directors and development director report to and coordinate with the executive director.

Engagement and Empowerment

The division of engagement and empowerment is fairly easy to distinguish on this campus.  Empowered students come to leadership team meetings, plan events, and stop by the house to just hang out.  The engagement students are everyone else, people who come to one or two events, who stop by and say hi at tabling, or who I've contacted out of the blue simply because I know that they are Jewish.  Mel's job is to work with the empowered students to create programs and help them develop leadership skills.  My job is to build meaningful one-on-one relationships with all students, especially those not actively involved with Hillel, do unique and fun programming in some way related to Judaism for engagement students, to be a resource and sometimes support system for students.  In less technical terms, I take students who are not actively involved in Hillel out to coffee or lunch and get to know them.  Once I've built a relationship with a student then I help them connect to the Hillel or any other Jewish interest that they have.  Engagement is fun!  I get to meet a lot of cool college students and get to know them.  Watching them connect to their Judaism is a unique privilege.

Student Leadership

The student leadership structure at the DU Hillel is very loose and free flowing.  Only two of the student leadership positions, the president and vice president, are elected.  All other leadership positions are taken on by students interested in that type of programming, such as social, tezdek, education or ritual.  The leadership team and any other interested students meet twice a month to plan events.

Supervision

Supervision is a key component of a successful year as a Fellow.  Supervision is the relationship between a JCSC Fellow and their couch, in my case Mel and Me.  Mel and I have informal updates and check-ins daily.  Because we share the same office our lines of communication are very open and we always keep each other updated on what we are doing and the goals we are working towards.  Because we have so much informal supervision we only have formal supervision meetings every other week.  We go out to lunch so that we can have a private conference about our goals, strategies, programs, students, and the outcomes of our recent past projects.  Supervision is a great tool that keeps me focused, motivated, and encourages my creativity.  It is also an opportunity to evaluate and grow.
